Firearms Licensing fees

As has been highlighted previously, work was ongoing to review and increase the fees for certificates. The fees have not been increased for nine years. While the demand from the shooting organisations has been that service levels should increase to reflect the increase in fees, we await to see if there is such a commitment from the police nationally. The level of service varies significantly throughout GB, from excellent to downright abysmal.

Within a: Written statements - Written questions, answers and statements - UK Parliament: on 17 December 2024, the Minister stated, "Firearms licensing fees have not increased since 2015 and are now significantly less than the cost of the service provided by police forces. This funding deficit is impacting the effectiveness of police firearms licensing controls and the crucial role they play in safeguarding the public. We, therefore, intend to lay a statutory instrument when parliamentary time allows to increase firearms licensing fees to provide full-cost recovery for police forces, in line with our manifesto commitment. The additional revenue raised will be retained by police forces to support the important improvements needed in firearms licensing.”

We will keep you updated regarding any planned increase and when it will occur.
